Police: Woman and daughter attacked at rest stop

WILSONVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem woman and her three-year-old child were attacked at a rest stop just outside of Wilsonville Friday.

Oregon State Police say the brazen assault happened just before 5pm when the two got out of their car to take a walk in the Baldock rest area.

At first, state troopers say they were investigating the attack as an attempted kidnapping, but at this point they don't know the motive behind the assault.

Investigators are actively looking for the suspect.

OSP confirms the 33-year-old woman was attacked from behind when she was walking with her three-year-old daughter.

Investigators say the suspect said nothing and just began beating the woman with a hard unknown object.

The mother then reportedly threw herself on top of her daughter to protect her.

Investigators believe at one point the suspect even strangled the woman before running away from the parking lot.

The woman was rushed to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. Her daughter sustained no injuries and went home with other family members, according to investigators.

"It's scary, I travel through this stop here often, and it makes you step back and wonder if you want to stop and use it," said Lori Goodwin, who passed through the rest stop Friday night.

"There's  bad people anywhere you go,  you have to be alert and look out for each other," said Rick Hoyt, who was walking his dog at the rest stop Friday.

Investigators say they called in the Clackamas County Sheriff's plane to search for the suspect from the skies and set up a perimeter around the rest stop to look for him using their K-9 unit.

OSP believes he left the area on foot, but say he very easily could have run to a car and could be anywhere at this point.

The victim got a brief look as the suspect ran away and described him as a white male, unknown age, approximately 5'10", and medium build. He was wearing faded, dirty dark pants and an unknown color short sleeve shirt. His hair from the back looked brown in color, cut above the collar.

Investigators are heavily relying on witnesses, and encourage anyone who knows something about the attack to immediately call police.

The Baldock rest area was open again at 7:30 p.m.
