Eduardo Marmolejo could accept a plea deal in the 2011 murder of his principal Suzette York.
Mental evaluations found he was both sane and competent to stand trial.
Memphis police say he stabbed Suzette York to death at the Memphis Junior Academy.
(WMC-TV) - A teen accused of stabbing his teacher to death is working out a plea deal with prosecutors that may keep him from going to trial.
Eduardo Marmolejo, 18, is charged with first degree murder and accused of stabbing his teacher, Suzette York, to death during the first week of school in August 2011.
In addition to teaching classes at the Memphis Junior Academy, York also doubled as the school's principal. According to police, Marmolejo started planning to kill York at the end of the previous school year in May 2011.
Two weeks ago, prosecutors and defense attorneys told Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Mark Ward that they were working on a potential plea deal, which Marmolejo would either accept or decline by Monday, August 19..
Monday morning, Marmolejo's defense attorney requested more time -- two more weeks -- he said in order to further discuss a possible deal with prosecutors.
"I can tell you that those discussions seem to be fruitful," said defense attorney Leslie Ballin. "And I'm optimistic that there will be a resolution to be presented to Judge Ward on September 3 about concluding this matter."
The judge approved to re-set the matter for September 3.
Shelby County Assistant District Attorney Reggie Henderson said the delay is the result of further discussion between Ballin and Marmolejo because the parameters of the plea deal have not changed, though he declined to elaborate on those parameters.
"I'm not going to discuss that. We can't discuss that," Henderson said . "If he pleads, obviously you'll know what they are. If he doesn't, then there will be a trial.
Henderson says Marmolejo has to make up his mind by some point.
