An Oregon man who was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison was found murdered himself at the State Penitentiary in Salem.
Oregon State Police confirm that 54-year-old Joseph Akins was found dead in his cell over the weekend. Akins was found guilty of the rape and murder of Susan Holser, a mother of two, who was found dead in 1994. After 10 years on the run, Akins was arrested and convicted when new DNA evidence created a break in the case. In 2008, he was sentenced to prison with no chance of parole until at least December 2022.
Guards at the prison found Akin's body in his cell at about 10 a.m. Saturday. After an investigation, it was determined that he was a victim of homicide. The penitentiary issued a lockdown while they searched the crime scene and interviewed witnesses.
A suspect has been identified and is currently being housed in solitary confinement while the investigation goes forward. Any criminal charges will be determined by the District Attorney's office once the investigation is complete.
