Car crash off cliff caused major delays on coastal highway

Posted: Updated:

A serious crash off the side of a cliff partially closed Highway 101 on the Oregon coast Monday.

The crash was reported at around 3 p.m. Monday about seven miles north of Newport in Lincoln County.

Images from the scene show a car flipped over down the side of a cliff off the highway. Firefighters said a woman was trapped in the car and a rope rescue team got her out. She was flown to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Investigators have not yet revealed the cause of the crash.

Drivers in the area said traffic is backed up for miles at the scene of the crash. The Oregon Department of Transportation said the highway was expected to be restricted to a single lane or flagged until at least 7:30 p.m. Monday.

However, the highway was open again by 6:45 p.m.
