A former Oregon City High School student says he worked all summer to pay for this watch, which police say was stolen by the school's football coach.
OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -
Oregon City High School head football coach Kevin Strasser is facing charges of theft and official misconduct after allegations surfaced he stole a former student's watch.
Police arrested Kevin Strasser at his home in Milwaukie on Tuesday. He was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on $15,000 bail.
The former student, 18-year-old Cameron Rogers, says he noticed his watch went missing at the end of the 2012 school year.
Rogers says he worked months to save up $600 dollars to buy the watch for his birthday.
Rogers confronted Strasser, who was his weight lifting teacher at the time, about the disappearance. Rogers says that Strasser then admitted to seeing the watch in the lost and found drawer, but didn't know where it went.
Months later, Rogers says a friend spotted his watch at a local pawn shop. Police were able to identify Strasser as the suspect.
"Honestly, it doesn't really make sense to me," said OCHS Sophomore Brendan Watson. "Why steal a watch from a student that goes to the school you work at, why steal at all honestly."
"It's weird he's being accused of stealing, because he doesn't seem like the teacher who would do that," said OCHS Junior Dylan Green.
Strasser is also a P.E. teacher at the school. School officials released a statement Wednesday.
"We are all shocked and saddened by this news. Anytime the actions of an educator may have betrayed the trust of our students and community, we are heartbroken," the statement said.
A substitute teacher will replace Strasser pending the outcome of the investigation. Athletic director Bruce Reece will become the acting head football coach.
Strasser has been the head coach at Oregon City High School since 2011. Prior to that, he coached in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes, and at St. Paul High School near Newberg.
"I'm shocked really, he helped us last year to the playoffs, he's a good coach, I don't know why he would do this," said OCHS Junior Alex Behrendt.
Strasser also played college football at Oregon State University.
