Driver cited for DUII after SUV plunges 75 feet down embankment

A rope rescue team saved two people who plunged 75 feet down an embankment near Troutdale and the driver is now facing DUII charges.

It happened just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday off Southeast Kerslake Road.

Deputies said the 2001 Ford Excursion rolled once down the steep ravine and landed back on its wheels. First responders were initially unable to see the vehicle from the roadway because of the steepness of the embankment and the heavy tree canopy.

The passenger called 911 and was told to honk the horn to help emergency crews find them.

The Gresham Fire Department rope rescue team was called to the scene and got both people out of the SUV. They were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The driver, Denise Sumpter, 42, of Gresham, was cited and released at the hospital on charges of DUII and assault.
