REPORT CARD: Is there no room for improvement in Westlake Schools?

Posted: Updated:
WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) -

Debbie Paul has three children that will be heading back to Westlake Schools.  She says the quality of the school system is one of the big reasons she moved from Lakewood to Westlake.

"I have been happy so far."

This year the new school report cards that the Ohio Department of Education released for the 2012-2013 school year have parents in this well-to-do suburb a little concerned.

In the categories of grade standards met, grade value added and 5 year graduation rate, Westlake Schools got all A's.  On the contrary, in the categories of gifted value added, disabled value added and lowest 20 percent growth, the school system got D's.

"I think if each teacher takes the time to deal with each kid on a regular basis those scores are going to slowly come up," says Andrew Magels.

Mangels has three children that go to Westlake Schools.  He says the school system performs at such a high level that there's not as much room for improvement like there is in other schools, and that's where the low marks come from.

"I think that when you look at the raw scores Westlake does very well.  I think they have it all under control, and we will be fine."
