Portland Thorns FC will square off against top-seeded Western New York in the National Women's Soccer League championship match on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PST, and the inaugural NWSL championship game will be nationally televised live on FOX Sports 2 and online at FOXSoccer2Go.
Entering the NWSL playoffs as the No. 3 seed, Thorns FC earned a dramatic, come from behind victory over second-seed FC Kansas City on Saturday at Verizon Wireless Field at Shawnee Mission District Stadium.
Portland overcame an early two-goal deficit, forcing the match into overtime, where midfielder Allie Long netted the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute for a 3-2 win.
In Saturday's second semifinal match, Western New York earned a 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Sky Blue FC at Sahlen's Stadium. U.S. Women's National Team midfielder Carli Lloyd recorded a brace with goals in the 33rd minute and the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
Portland, which finished level on points (38) with Western New York during the regular season, faced the Flash twice during the regular season, earning draws in both games. Portland recorded a come-from-behind, 1-1 draw on July 14 at JELD-WEN Field and a scoreless draw at Sahlen's Stadium on Aug. 10 in the penultimate game of the regular season.
