Cold case squad arrests suspect one year after bones found in forest

Posted: Updated:

A cold case squad from Salem arrested a man in Texas on Monday in connection with the murder of his wife.

Last week, a grand jury handed down a secret indictment on charges of murder and abuse of a corpse for Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez.

The indictment came almost one year after a hunter found bones near Niagara Heights Road, about one mile north and east of the town of Gates. The forested area is in the Santiam Canyon vicinity of Marion County.

A forensic anthropologist determined the bones were that of a human, and cold case detectives were eventually able to confirm the skeleton was that of Maribel Gutierrez-Salinas, who disappeared in 2011.

Deputies said they never revealed the identity of the human remains, or the fact that Gutierrez-Salinas' husband was the suspect, because they didn't want to compromise the investigation or risk the safety of some.

After the grand jury's indictment, cold case detectives arrested Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez on Monday in Laredo, TX.

There's no word yet on when or if Villanueva Gutierrez will be extradited.
