VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Three children hid in a closet and called for help, while a stranger broke down their front door Tuesday morning.

Vancouver police say it happened around 10 a.m. near Northeast 31st Street and 133rd Court..

The children, ages 11, 13 and 15, were home alone while their dad was at the grocery store and their mom was at work. They told Fox 12 a man rang their doorbell but they didn't know him, so they didn't answer the door. The man jiggled the doorknob, then walked away.

One of the children went outside and took a cell phone photo of the man as he walked away.

The man came back two more times and rang the doorbell, while attempting to open the door.

As the children hid in a bedroom closet and called their dad for help, the man broke down the front door, denting the door and damaging the frame. It is believed he entered the home, but did not take anything.

The man left before their father and police arrived.

"It's just not easy to know that someone is trying to get in your house, your kids are home and you're not there to stop them," said the homeowner, who asked not to be identified to protect his children.

The kids were not harmed. Police searched the area with a K-9, but the man was not located.

The suspect is described as a white man, around 6'1" to 6'2" in his mid 30s with a heavy build. He had dark brown short hair and a goatee or mustache. He was wearing a light-colored plaid shirt and sunglasses perched on top of his head.

"I think it's terrible," one neighbor said. "It's a big eye-opener though for people to get to know their neighbors, get to know who you should be in your neighborhood and who shouldn't be."

Anyone who may have seen the suspect is asked to call the Vancouver police tip line at 360-487-7399.

For their part, police and the children's family said the kids did the right thing by not opening the front door and calling for help.

"Oh, I think they did everything right," their father said.
