LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Senator Mitch McConnell is swaying Kentucky women to the "right" side of politics as he tries to close any perceived gender gap.

McConnell's re-election campaign announced "Women for Team Mitch" during a campaign stop Friday. The republican U.S. Senate minority leader visited with a group of women the campaign claimed represented every county in Kentucky.

It's a sign GOP leaders are targeting women more than a year before voters have their chance to choose. McConnell needs to pick up as many women in the voting bloc as he can - considering a potential opponent will be one.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes' campaign immediately sent a news release criticizing McConnell's gender focused campaign.
"Simply saying, 'I'm married to a woman' doesn't speak loud enough. Senator McConnell's actions over the course of 28 years show how he has failed to stand up for women," said Grimes in a statement.

"And what you're going to see by my opponent, obviously, is the Barack Obama playbook - to try to divide people with gender based attacks," McConnell told the crowd.

Democrats have blasted McConnell's voting record on issues related to women, including McConnell's vote against the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act.  GOP opponents claim the legislation included immigration provisions and federal funding for certain contraceptives.
