COLUMBUS, NM (CBS5) -

A man was found trying to sneak into the U.S. by lying face down in a shipment of red chile peppers.

Authorities said the man appeared drunk and there was a bottle of tequila next to him.

The 35-year-old Mexican national told U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents he climbed into the commercial hopper while it was being staged in Mexico with hopes on catching a ride to Chicago.

He got just 100 yards before he was discovered at the Columbus, New Mexico port.

He was processed for expedited removal and returned to Mexico.
