Iconic Sea Gypsy gutted by fire, escaped dog still missing

Residents and visitors of the central Oregon coast are being asked to keep an eye out for a golden retriever whose owner was injured during a fire at a well-known lodging destination.

Crews from North Lincoln Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the Sea Gypsy in Lincoln City at 2:48 a.m. Saturday.

A blaring smoke alerted awoke the dog's owner, a woman sleeping in an upper-floor condo apartment. She awoke to find smoke and flames spreading throughout the room.

The woman's hands were severely burned as she tried to put the fire out herself. As a result she wound up being transported to the Intensive Care Unit at North Lincoln Hospital.

Meanwhile, fire spread to the adjacent unit. Both condo apartments were fully engulfed in flames as firefighters used a100-foot aerial platform to reach the upper floor.

When the smoke cleared, it was apparent that the Sea Gypsy, a once well-known hotel which was converted into a complex of condominiums, had sustained heavy damage.

Investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, anyone who spots the female golden retriever is being asked to call Lincoln City police.
