New Les Schwab in St. Helens replaces burned down store

MT. ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A year after a massive fire, the Les Schwab Tire Center in St. Helens is getting a fresh start.

A new store built to replace the building that burned down opened today. Before completion, Les Schwab was running out of a temporary location.

Manager Terry McMahon says it was one of the scariest days of his life when the fire broke out in August 2012. The blaze shut down a section of Highway 30 and re-routed part of the Hood to Coast Relay.

McMahon says the new store isn't just a replacement, but an energy-efficient upgrade too. The roof is outfitted with sensors that tell the lawn sprinklers not to turn on when it rains.

Located in the same spot on Highway 30 as the old one, the new Les Schwab will hold an official grand opening October 12.
