GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -
A gunman was on the run Tuesday after shooting a man dead at the Pine Square Apartments in Gresham late Monday night.
Police were called out to the apartment complex's parking lot at 753 N.E. 178th Ave. just before 11 p.m.
They found Makeitho "Tito" De Monz Herring, 37, unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Overnight, Gresham police officers interviewed several witnesses who were in the area when the shooting happened. The Gang Enforcement Team was notified that a shooting occurred, since gang members are known to live in the area, said Lt. Claudio Grandjean.
Investigators said Tuesday the case does not appear to be gang related or linked to any other gang incidents in the area. Police believe the victim knew the shooter.
The identity of the shooter, however, is still not known.
The victim's family declined to speak about the shooting Tuesday, but did release a statement.
"Makeitho better known as Tito was a man who was loved and known by many in Portland. Born in Oklahoma where his brother Mario Herring is now buried who was also murdered in Portland back in 1996 and he was raised here in Oregon as well. Our family appreciates all of the support."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Gresham Police tip line at 503-618-2719 or 1-888-989-3505.
