TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Most of the bridges across Ohio that are considered both "structurally deficient" and "fracture critical" are on routes that cross creeks and rivers in rural parts of the state.
Only two are on Ohio's interstate highways.
An Associated Press review of national bridge records finds that nearly 8,000 bridges around the country are in need of rehabilitation or replacement and could be at risk of collapse if a single, vital component fails.
That includes about 420 bridges in Ohio.
State transportation officials say dozens of those bridges have been replaced or closed recently, leaving about 380 that are both "structurally deficient" and "fracture critical."
An Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman says bridges with both of those red flags are still safe for motorists but may need extra care.
