SW WA family desperate to find missing service dog

Posted: Updated:

A Battle Ground family is desperate to find their service dog after it mysteriously disappeared from their backyard.

The one-year-old boxer named Bella was in training to help the family's 2-year-old son, who has special needs.

The family says the dog was learning to alert them whenever the little boy is about to have a seizure.

"My son is nonverbal. He can't talk, and he can't roll over," said Shandi Ward. "We need to make sure he's safe when he has seizure, and Bella helps us do that."

Ward says she let Bella outside last Friday and went to tuck her kids into bed. When she came back outside, Bella was gone.

Its possible Bella somehow found a way out of the yard, says Ward, but her biggest fear is that someone took her.

"This is a small town, and no one has seen her running around. The longer that time goes on, the more we feel like someone has her," said Ward.

The Wards have posted fliers all over Battle Ground and on social media websites. They've searched the neighborhood by foot and by car but have turned up no trace of Bella anywhere.

"It's been a long couple of days," said Ward. "We've just had a lot of time and bonding with her, and we just want her back. She means everything to us."

Bella was last seen on Sept. 13 near 20th and 6th streets in Battle Ground.

Those with any information on the dog should call 503-309-1912.
