I-84 crash kills 11-year-old girl, injures eight others

A rollover crash in Gresham killed an 11-year-old girl and sent several other people to the hospital.

Gresham police said a van carrying a church group was getting onto westbound Interstate 84 from 181st Avenue.

At some point, the driver of the van lost control and rolled down the side of an embankment off the freeway.

An 11-year-old girl from Portland was killed in the crash, and eight others were hurt. Some of the people who were hospitalized were able to return home Sunday night.

Police say there were five adults and four children in the van when it crashed.

The crash may be weather-related because the wind was blowing and the roads were very wet from rain at the time of the crash.

Police have not released the name of the 11-year-old girl who died.

The driver of the van is cooperating with the investigation, and police do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Investigators will examine the van and determine if there were any mechanical issues and if safety restraints were being used by all of the occupants.

The van is registered to Salvados Para Servir Ministries in Beaverton.
