Neighbors want help as another vehicle nearly plows into Antioch home

Posted: Updated:

An Antioch woman says she has to avoid certain rooms in her own home because she's afraid a car might come crashing through. She has reason to worry, as the most recent incident happened Tuesday night.

"If a truck hit that end, and I was in there, I might have me a little 'come to Jesus' meeting there," said homeowner Glenda Atwood.

Ruts in Atwood's front yard show the remains of another close call. Her home sits at a three-way intersection at the corner of East Ridge and Packard drives.

In the past 19 years, she says vehicles have collided into her home or trees 12 times. Her neighbor, Eddie Gentry, says his yard has been hit, too, including five times just in the past year.

"When the heat is out on the pavement, it causes the oil to rise up. A little bit of moisture gets on it, and it is just like glassy, like ice. You come down this way, you can't stop," Gentry said.

Atwood said a truck coming down the hill in front of her home couldn't stop at the intersection, and plowed into her yard just before midnight Tuesday.

The driver took off, leaving behind a mangled guardrail and a beer can next to a destroyed lilac bush.

"My wife has made repeated calls and tried to get something done. And they've come out and run radar for a day, and then they're gone and nothing ever happens," Gentry said.

Posted warning signs don't slow drivers much, either.

Neighbors think flashing lights and something more drastic might be necessary.

"They have those little things cut into the asphalt that clickety-clack and warn you that you are coming to a dead stop," Atwood said. "And maybe if they'd put something like that over there."

Until then, Atwood has another muddy mess to clean up.

Officials in the Department of Public Works tell Channel 4 News they are going to work with neighbors in that area to find a solution.
