New hotel may be built in Portland's Lloyd District

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A new hotel could be coming to Portland's Lloyd District. Metro is negotiating with Hyatt to build a new 600-room hotel by the Oregon Convention Center.

The idea is to bring in more business by giving convention guest a place to stay. Private funding would cover most of the $198-million project. However, on Wednesday, the Portland City Council voted to approve spending #60 million on the project as well. That money comes from a fund dedicated to promoting tourism.

Supporters say it will bring new jobs and revitalize the Lloyd District. Opponents worry that the hotel could unfairly undercut the prices of competing hotels.

The next step is to finalize the construction deal with the hotel development company.
