McNary High School concession stand burglarized for fifth time

Posted: Updated:

Thieves cleaned out the concession stand at McNary High School over the weekend, making off with more than $1,300 in food, drinks and merchandise.

It's the fifth time the concession stand has been burglarized in the past year.

"I'm very frustrated," said Rhonda Brattain, president of the booster club. "I'm very disappointed."

After the last burglary in April, she said the school installed new locks and reinforced the wooden windows, but thieves still managed to pry them open with a crow bar.

"We would not have stored anything in here if we would have thought they could break in again," she said.

Money raised from concession stand sales supports the school's athletic programs and students. But the money is now being used to replace what was stolen. The concession stand was able to open for Thursday night's football game after the shelves were restocked

"I just hope we can get more locks or something so they don't break in again," said student Savannah Rose Compton.

The booster club, along with other students and parents, told FOX 12 the school district should be doing more to secure the concession stand so this doesn't happen again.

"We were offered, after our last break-in, a security system from a former McNary alumni, and monthly monitoring," said Brattain. "But the school district, because of the rules and regulations, would not allow us to have that."

John Honey, the school's principal, told FOX 12 he wasn't aware of the booster club's security system offer, but it is something he would be willing to consider.

Honey said the school is doing everything it can to secure the concession stand, including trying to come up with a cost-effective way to install metal security bars on the windows.

"If we would have had a security system we would have been alerted immediately and caught the perpetrators," said Brattain. "And possibly not lost all our supplies."

In the meantime, the booster club said it will no longer be storing supplies in the concession stand overnight until it can be properly secured.

Police said they have no suspects in the case.
