A man showing off his gun to a friend dropped the firearm, causing it to discharge when it hit the ground and shoot the man Sunday afternoon.
Yamhill County deputies said the accidental shooting happened at a home on Fairdale Road in Yamhill just before 2 p.m.
Deputies said the man had just taken his Colt .45 black powder pistol out of a gun safe and was showing it to his friend. He removed it from its leather holster, but then dropped it on the ground.
The bullet entered the man's lower abdomen and traveled upward through his body, ultimately lodging in his neck, the sheriff's office said.
Two friends who have EMT training immediately tended to the shooting victim.
When paramedics and deputies responded, they could see the bullet protruding from beneath the man's skin.
He was taken to Willamette Valley Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.
Deputies said he's in good condition and will make a full recovery.
Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree said the incident serves as a reminder to treat all guns as though they're loaded.
