Scam using 'Portland Christian High School' in Craigslist ads
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Scammers may be using the name of a local high school to fleece unwary people of their money.
Craig Hogue, a local Iraq War veteran, says he uncovered the scam after he was targeted. He says he posted an ad on Craigslist to sell a Budweiser sign. He was asking for $60, but the potential buyer sent a check for $980 instead. The check used the name of Portland Christian High School. The sender asked Hogue to send him a check with the difference.
Instead, Hogue called police and the school.
According to Portland Christian High School, they've had people in 23 different states contacting them about the scam. In every case, they've been able to contact their bank in time. They have not lost any money due to the scammers, but police want to warn people to be wary and report the scam if targeted.
