Nasty weather shuts down Portland sports fields

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

All athletic fields run by Portland Parks and Rec are closed through Friday.

The closure is because of the recent rainfall, and it affects all field types - soccer, rugby, baseball and softball.

The closures only apply to adult sports leagues that use the fields. So far, high school football games have not been affected by the closures.

Officials say the grounds are so saturated with water that playing on them would cause damage that would last until next year.

As for Portland Public Schools fields, all lower-level high school games involving freshmen and junior varsity teams have been canceled for Tuesday. Varsity games will continue as scheduled, and Portland Public Schools officials plan to reevaluate and update the schedule daily throughout the week.

Portland Parks officials have posted the latest information on their website at this link. Portland Public Schools made its schedule announcement on its Facebook page.
