LINN COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A man is charged with murder for a Linn County cold case from more than 25 years ago.

On July 31, 1987, deputies received a report about Thomas Hyland, 35. Someone who knew him said he was missing and had likely been killed.

Nearly two years later, on April 29, 1989, Hyland's body was found by mushroom pickers in Sweet Home.

Detectives determined that Hyland was shot and killed.

Dennis Beach, who was 25 at the time, was identified as a possible suspect. However, he was not charged in the case at the time.

He is now.

Cold case detectives began actively pursuing new leads again in 2008. Last month, the case was presented to the Linn County Grand Jury for consideration.

On Sept. 30, an arrest warrant was issued for Beach, charging him with the murder of Hyland. Detectives located Beach in Dayton, NV and traveled there to interview him.

Nevada deputies took him into custody and booked him in jail. He is now awaiting extradition to Oregon.

Investigators have not revealed what led to Beach's arrest. They said he knew Hyland and the two had been inmates together at the Oregon State Penitentiary through the early part of 1987.

The murder case will be prosecuted by the Linn County District Attorney's Office.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Detective Mike Harmon at the Linn County Sheriff's Office at 541-967-3950.
