Chesterfield mother accused of leaving 3-year-old home alone

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield mother is facing charges after allegedly leaving her 3-year-old home alone. Police say that toddler ended up walking the streets.

"I was like damn," said the concerned neighbor who spotted the child and called 911. He did not want to be identified. "What the hell? Where is your momma?

The man says children often play in the community, but this was no laughing matter.

"He was walking down the street," said the neighbor. "With a teddy bear... wearing a diaper and a little Charlie Brown yellow and black striped shirt."

Mandee Aquino was arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of children reckless disregard. That concerned neighbor says he would do the same thing again.

"Call the law!" he said. "I don't like the law that much, but that's what they are here for when [expletive] like that happens."

No one answered the door at the child's Chesterfield home along Stanley Drive, though a candle was left burning in the window. The home is just a block over from the high traffic area of Meadowbrook High School.

"It's awful," said neighbor Mandily Franklin. "It's very awful. It breaks my heart to see that someone would leave their 3-year-old at home and not care."

Police say the child was left at home alone for under an hour. Aquino is due in court Wednesday morning.
