Depoe Bay police blow up object washed up on beach

DEPOE BAY, OR (KPTV) -

An unusual find along the beach near Depoe Bay ended with a big explosion.

Wednesday morning, a beach walker came across a device labeled "call police or military." As it turns out, the object was a marine location marker usually dropped from helicopters or planes to indicate position at sea.

After consulting the Air Force, local authorities on the scene deemed the device unsafe. Recovery crews were concerned that chemicals inside the marker may not have all be released, creating a potentially hazardous situation.

After telling nearby businesses and neighbors that they may hear a loud explosion, police moved the marker to a remote area of Gleneden Beach and detonated it.

Local police remind beach combers to call 911 if they find anything unusual or potentially dangerous on the beach.
