GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A police chase through Gresham ended with a big crash in the middle of a busy intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Officers said they were chasing a stolen Jeep Wrangler when the driver crashed into four other vehicles at the intersection of Northwest Eastman Parkway and Powell Boulevard.

"I'm lucky," said Frank Crane, who had a green light when his SUV was T-boned by the Jeep. "Six more feet and I could have been in the hospital."

Police said the Jeep was reported stolen earlier in the day from an auction yard at 238th and Sandy in Multnomah County. Officers recognized the stolen Jeep when it passed by a police station and gave chase. Police called off the chase moments before the crash because it was getting too dangerous for other drivers on the road.

"There was a huge crash," said Jeanette Miller. "Smoke and gas everywhere."

After the crash, Miller said the man driving the Jeep took off running.

"He flipped over the white car, hit the Blazer in the side, the wheel flew off, he was mid-air and he spun around and rolled right up into the bushes," said Miller. "And the fact that he could move and get out of the car after all that happened was amazing to me."

Miller, who is a medical assistant going into nursing school, helped stabilize two other drivers who were injured in the crash until paramedics arrived.

With the help of a K-9, police arrested the suspect a short time later. His name has not yet been released, and it remains unclear what charges he will face.
