UNION, OR (KPTV) -

A truck driver hauling scrap metal lost control on Highway 237, was thrown from the truck and ended up underneath a bail of recycled metal.

Police said the 1990 GMC truck was heading north on Highway 237 near Milepost 24 south of Union at 9:50 a.m. Thursday. The driver, Benjamin Thompson, 37, of La Grande, lost control on a left curve and hit a guardrail.

The truck overturned, spilling metal all over the ground. Thompson told troopers he was using a lap safety belt, but was still thrown from the truck.

Firefighters rescued him from underneath bales of metal. He was taken to Grande Ronde Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

No citations were issued in this case.
