Crater Lake field trip hits road closed sign thanks to shutdown

CRATER LAKE, OR (KPTV) -

It's no secret that this week's government shutdown is affecting national parks, but some local students were disappointed to learn it locked them out of Crater Lake.

Every three years, the Metropolitan Learning Center in Portland sends its fourth- and sixth-graders to Crater Lake for a field study.

But this year, the government shutdown locked them out of the park.

Parents said the children asked the ranger a lot of questions and it became a lesson about how the government operates.

OPB reported the trip had been in the works for six months, and that they moved their base camp to a state park in Southern Oregon.
