Investigators staying tight-lipped about Cedar Mill murder

Posted: Updated:

At least one person is being held by police in connection with the murder of a 71-year-old woman whose body was found in her Cedar Mill home Saturday.

A spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff's Office said an autopsy will determine Jacqueline Bell's cause of death. An initial report said homicidal violence is suspected.

Washington County sheriff's deputies found Bell's body after receiving a call for a welfare check at 8:21 a.m. in the 10200 block of Northwest Lee Street.

"It's really sad because she was a nice, sweet, little old lady," said neighbor Joe Pollock.

Pollock said Bell's friends called authorities after she didn't show up for their morning walk.

"Because they normally walk every morning with her," Pollock said, "and then all of a sudden she doesn't show up. They have the welfare check on her and found out something happened inside the house."

Investigators believe Bell was killed sometime early Saturday morning.

Deputies said they have detained more than one person for questioning.

However, no one has been arrested or charged. Deputies believe Bell knew her killer, but they would not elaborate.

"It used to look like she had a friend or a boyfriend over there helping her cut the grass and splitting some of the trees for a while," said Pollock. "But that kind of happened about a year ago and then quit totally after that. I didn't know what was going on."

Deputies said Bell had currently been living with a family member in her home, but they would not specify the relationship. Neighbors told FOX 12 that a young male relative had been living with Bell.

Deputies would not say where the body was discovered inside the house.

A motive for the murder remains unclear, and the sheriff's office is expected to release more information sometime Monday.
