Man jumps into passing car, uses knife in attempted carjacking

A Gresham man is arrested after sheriff's deputies say he used a knife to carjack a motorists while they were driving.

The Clackamas County sheriff's office says the carjacking happened around 4 p.m. on Saturday on Sunnyside Road, west of Highway 212.

They say Ramon Manuel Gonzalez, 33, was standing near the road, partially in traffic.

Deputies said  that as a driver slowed down to go around Gonzalez, the suspect jumped into the back seat of the passing car.

While in the car, Gonzalez allegedly used a knife and told the driver to ‘empty his pockets.'

However, the driver fought back and hit Gonzales with a metal thermos. Investigators say Gonzalez dropped the knife, grabbed the victim's driver's license and tried to take off, but the back doors had the child locks engaged.

That's when deputies say Gonzalez was forced to crawl out the back window.

Several deputies and officers along with a K-9 unit searched the area for about an hour, before they spotted the suspect getting into a vehicle driven by a woman, who later turned out to be the man's wife.

Officials say Gonzalez was knocking on doors in the area of SE Rock Creek Court, and it was neighbors who helped deputies narrow down their search area.
