A local high school has paid a permanent tribute to a Coast Guard pilot killed in a helicopter crash.

Thomas Cameron graduated from Cleveland High School in 2005.

In February 2012, as he was finishing flight training on his way to becoming a rescue pilot, a helicopter carrying him and three other crew members crashed in Mobile Bay, AL. The other three men were also killed.

Cameron was 24 years old.

On Thursday, between homecoming soccer and football games at Cleveland, the newly-renovated field house was unveiled. It was dedicated in Cameron's honor and will be known as the LTJG Thomas J. Cameron Memorial Field House.

Cameron was the captain of his high school soccer team and also earned that role at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He graduated from the academy in New London, CT in 2009.

His family said Cameron had wanted to join the Coast Guard since he was a sophomore in high school.

The field house was renovated in his honor with funding from his family and friends.
