The Dalles officer hurt, suspect dead after shooting in Gorge

Posted: Updated:

An officer-involved shooting left one man dead and put a police officer in the hospital Wednesday night.

It happened in the Columbia River Gorge town of Wishram, WA. Police say they were visiting the suspect's home near Columbia Avenue as part of an ongoing rape investigation when the shooting started.

Oregon State Police detectives identified the man inside the home on Main Street and were able to see through a window that he had a gun. As officers surrounded the home, the suspect ran out the back door and jumped a fence.

He led police on a two-block chase through back yards, and at one point, turned and shot at a police officer from The Dalles Police Department, according to police.

That same officer returned fire, killing the suspect. No other officers fired their weapons.

The officer is reported to be alert and recovering at a local hospital.

Three other officers were also at the scene during the shooting.

Officials haven't released any names but said the officer shot is a 17-year veteran of The Dalles Police.

Several officers headed to the emergency room after their fellow officer was shot.

"They understand that the job is done," said Chief Jay Waterbury, of The Dales Police Department. "We're all up there praying for him now. He should be fine."
