PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A fiery crash involving three vehicles shut down McLoughlin Boulevard ahead of the morning commute Thursday.

Portland police responded to the crash on Southeast McLoughlin just north of the Tacoma Street Bridge at 5:16 a.m.

One of the cars caught fire after the crash, but officers and firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.

The driver of the burning car has been taken to a Portland hospital to be treated for traumatic injuries, and police described them as "life-threatening."

All lanes of northbound McLoughlin Boulevard were closed for hours while police investigated the crash.

Drivers should use alternate routes, such as Southeast 17th or Milwaukie avenues, until McLoughlin reopens.

TriMet buses experienced major delays due to the congestion in the Sellwood area with some buses up to an hour late. TriMet also issued the following warning to commuters:

Riders on bus lines 31, 32, 33 and 99 should expect major delays as buses detour off Hwy 99E/McLoughlin and onto SE 17th. Buses will not serve stops a few stops on 99E between Ochoco St. to 17th and 99E, but the biggest impact is expected to be delays as17th Ave and other routes through the Sellwood area will likely be congested due to the closure of 99E.
