GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A Gresham man accused of killing his estranged wife and taking off with their daughter faces murder charges.

Joshua Cavett was in court Tuesday but did not enter a plea to those charges because he is changing attorneys.

He is accused of shooting and killing Jessie Doyle Cavett with her two young daughters nearby in their Gresham apartment. Police said Joshua Cavett took his non-custodial, 2-year-old daughter and went on the run, triggering an Amber Alert. The victim's 5-year-old daughter was left behind.

Also in the courtroom on Tuesday was the victim's sister, Jennie Cochran. She said she is still struggling to understand Jessie Cavett's death, but said the community has gone above and beyond to lend a hand.

"I'm still trying to make it feel real and so that is one of the reasons I wanted to make sure I was here today to see him," said Cochran. "I'm just really glad to see he doesn't look like he's doing too good. He looks really defeated. He looks really wiped out and defeated. And that's how he deserves to feel."

Joshua Cavett is charged with 13 different crimes. They include aggravated murder, burglary, custodial interference and being a felon in possession of a firearm, among others.

His trial is set for December.
