Iraq war vet gets home makeover thanks to team of volunteers

D'mitri Stoyanoff and his wife bought their 1907 Vancouver home a year-and-a-half ago.

As time and money allowed, they began to create their dream home, but life, as it often does, slowed work down.

They cared for Stoyanoff's mother after she suffered a heart attack. Now, a baby is on the way.

"We're expecting a baby girl. I'm due Nov. 1 so we're getting really close. We're down to the wire," Michelle Stoyanoff said.

The Stoyanoffs hoped to finish their house over the course of many years, but instead, thanks to the work of a team of volunteers, Stoyanoff, an Iraq war vet, had a remodeled home in a matter of days.

Around 30 volunteers from 11 metro-area Home Depot stores, plus their contracting partners, converged on the Stoyanoff home. They painted the inside and outside, and installed new kitchen flooring, countertop, interior doors and trim. They also installed new lighting inside and out, a new front deck, a back shed, added all new landscaping and a finished nursery.

All of it was accomplished in three days as a surprise for Stoyanoff.

Days earlier, Stoyanoff's best friend convinced him to take part in Hunting With Heroes, which got him out of the house for a few days and allowed the makeover to happen.

"Being able to see that experience while he was gone, knowing what was happening at the home, was really cool," said Scott Sneer, the CEO at Alpha Ecological and the organizer of the makeover.

The volunteers gathered on the Stoyanoff front lawn to await his arrival and the surprise of a lifetime.

"I guess I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. This is going to be wonderful to my family, for my baby that's on the way," he said. "What a great blessing for her that she can come home to this."

Sneer and the rest of Home With Heroes hope to help as many Northwest vets as they can. For more information, visit
