WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The battle of who was first in flight is no longer only between North Carolina and Ohio.

Connecticut is now claiming that it was the first state to put man in the sky. They are claiming that Gustave Whitehead was the first person to make and fly an airplane.

The original battle of first in flight was between North Carolina and Ohio. Ohio claims first in flight because the Wright brothers were born in Ohio.

North Carolina claims first in flight because the Wright brothers actually flew the first heavier than air, power driven aircraft at Kitty Hawk on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
