Armyworms marching through Hermiston

Posted: Updated:
HERMISTON, OR (AP) -

The city of Hermiston has been invaded by armyworms.

The East Oregonian newspaper reports (http://is.gd/Va7Dvx ) that hundreds of thousands of the small caterpillars arrived this fall, and are showing up in bunches on doors, lawns and porches.

Armyworms get their name because they move in mass, causing damage to yards and fields unless treated with pesticides.

Fully grown armyworms are about one and one-quarter inches long, dark colored with a broad band along the top of their body.

Experts say a mild winter and recent warm weather may have triggered this fall's invasion.
