Teens cite boredom for field vandalism, no criminal charges

Posted: Updated:

Four teens are accused of causing hundreds of dollars in damage to a Keizer sports complex out of boredom.

Earlier this month, the dugout was dismantled and benches were toppled at the Keizer Youth Association Sports Complex. Several other dugouts were destroyed in late September.

Volunteers said the vandals caused several hundred dollars in damage.

On Friday, police said they had interviewed all four suspects believed to have caused the damage. They are three 17-year-old boys and an 18-year-old.

Police said the suspects claimed their actions were not out of animosity or because of a bad experiences with the baseball program.

Instead, one of them claimed it was done out of boredom. All four admitted their actions were "stupid and inappropriate," according to police.

The Keizer Youth Sports Association is working with the families on a "civil compromise," including the reimbursement for the damages and to rebuild the destroyed structures.

Because of that, the police department is not pursuing criminal charges at this time. The teens are also not being identified by police.
