Convicted Mass. baby abusers sentenced to prison

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - A former North Andover woman and her one-time boyfriend who were both convicted of abusing her weeks-old infant have been sentenced.

The Eagle-Tribune ( ) reports that Heather Dragotta, the mother of the girl, was sentenced Tuesday to two months in prison.

Stephen Amos, who is not the baby's biological father but lived with Dragotta in 2010 when the girl was 5-weeks old, received up to three years in prison.

Prosecutors say the baby had 21 fractures and a brain hemorrhage consistent with shaking when she was taken to the hospital.

Dragotta was convicted last month of permitting the abuse and was convicted of causing it.

Dragotta said the broken bones were the result of infantile rickets, caused by a vitamin deficiency.

The girl now lives with her biological father.
