A man accused of abusing his girlfriend over an extended period of time and then beating her to death is guilty of murder.
Paul Sanelle was arrested at the Oak Hill Apartments, 15864 NW West Union Rd., in May 2012. Investigators said Julianne Herinckx was found unconscious and later died at the hospital.
Her death was ruled to be the result of blunt force trauma.
On Friday, a jury convicted Sanelle of murder.
Another woman who was also dating Sanelle and living in the same apartment denied he had killed Herinckx after his arrest in May 2012.
The woman told Fox 12 she heard Herinckx fall and then watched as Sanelle applied CPR and tried to save her.
"He's never lied to me," said the woman, who had two black eyes and bruises on her arm.
She said the three of them practiced martial arts together, leading to the injuries.
"I know that Paul did not kill her," she said in May 2012. "I know that she slipped and hit her head. I know that's what happened."
Prosecutors described the situation as a deadly love triangle, while the defense argued it was all part of their self-defense training. The coroner said Herinckx had one of the worst beatings he's seen in his career.
Sanelle is set to be sentenced on the murder conviction on Nov. 15.
