PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An early morning fire has seriously damaged a tavern in Northeast Portland.

Fire crews were called to Pal's Shanty on Northeast Sandy Boulevard just before 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Callers reported hearing an explosion and then seeing sparks and smoke coming from a second-story window.

"I saw the flame burst out the window and I was like, 'oh no, that's horrible,'" said Ted Thieman, who lives nearby.

Crews found large amounts of smoke coming from the bar when they arrived, and were concerned about the fire spreading to neighboring businesses.

A second alarm was called because of the threat of the fire spreading.

Fire crews had to evacuate the building after crews inside reported hazardous conditions.

According to the tavern's website, Pal's Shanty has been a part of the northeast Portland neighborhood since 1922.

"Pal's Shanty is like a Hollywood institution, really a Portland institution," added Thieman.

Others who stopped by Friday morning were devastated by the sight of the burned out building.

"I'm speechless. I don't know what to think. It's really sad," said Chris Gabriel, who was a frequent customer.

For many in this neighborhood, this was more than just a place for seafood and clam chowder.

"It's got a lot of character. We always enjoyed it and it was an easy place to go eat something," said Belinda Covell, who lives in the area.

The owner of Pal's Shanty said they plan to rebuild.

No one was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
