OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

Police are continuing to investigate what caused a crash involving three cars and a semi that shut down all lanes of Highway 99E Sunday afternoon.

According to Oregon State Police, at about 5 p.m. Sunday, a Suzuki Swift heading north on Highway 99E crossed the center line near milepost 16 and sideswiped a Nissan Maxima.

The Suzuki then hit an oncoming Pontiac car before colliding with the drive axle of a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer.

Police said the impact with the truck ruptured one of the truck's diesel tanks, broke two heavy suspension mounting brackets, and ejected the Suzuki's engine from the engine compartment.

The driver of the Suzuki, who had to be extricated from his car by rescuers, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was identified as Kris Kuykendall, age 52, of Canby. Police said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The drivers and passengers in the other vehicles were not hurt, with the exception of the driver of the Pontiac, who police say transported himself to a medical facility to be checked out for a possible injury.

The highway was closed for an investigation for six hours.

Approximately 40 gallons of diesel spilled before being contained. A local environmental clean-up company responded to the scene to absorb it.
