'Nerdy Bandit' targeting trendy Portland clothing shops

Posted: Updated:

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of a man nicknamed the "Nerdy Bandit."

Portland police said they gave the robber his nickname based on information from a witness, who described him as "nerdyish."

He's believed to be responsible for robberies at three trendy Portland clothing stores. In all three robberies, he entered the store, browsed for clothing for several minutes and then committed the robbery.

Police said they've linked him to the following three crimes:

  • Oct. 4 at 7:55 p.m., he walked up to the counter of the American Apparel store at 34th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard. He handed over a note implying he was armed, took an undisclosed amount of cash and walked out of the store. He was last seen walking east on Hawthorne.
  • Oct. 11 at 8:34 p.m., he entered the American Apparel at 1234 SW Stark St. and gave a demand note to the employee, who promptly ran away from the cash register. The suspect then fled the store and was last seen running west on West Burnside. He failed to get any cash in the robbery.
  • Oct. 13, 6:30 p.m., he handed a demand note to an employee at the Urban Outfitters off Northwest 23rd Avenue. This time, he was armed with a handgun. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran out the back entrance onto 24th Avenue.

Police describe the Nerdy Bandit as 5'8" to 6' tall with a skinny build, brown hair and in his early 20s. He wore a different hat in each robbery, has yellow teeth and black-rimmed glasses.
