A 32-year-old Coventry man has been arrested after being accused of making violent death threats against President Barack Obama and the first family.
Joshua Phillip Klimas, who was recently an engineering student at UConn, was arrested Wednesday by the United States Secret Service at his home.
"We all have our political views. But he just took it to the extreme," said his close friend, who wished not to be identified.
According to officials, on June 1, Klimas sent a message to the whitehouse.gov website that contained several threatening statements against Obama and his family, including, "If you do not resign by the end of the year, I will kill you."
In addition to that threat, Klimas wrote other disturbing comments like, "Your days are numbered and it will bring me much pleasure to watch the blood pour from your treasonous body," and "I will not rest until you are either behind bars or a pile of ashes."
The complaint said Klimas threatened other people.
According to the agent, Klimas admitted to writing that post and said it was his duty to protect the Constitution and it was a wake-up warning for the president.
"We were all confused. We never thought something like this would happen," said the friend.
Klimas said he had mental issues and was briefly committed to a hospital twice. He also said he took medical marijuana for anxiety and was being treated at UConn as well.
The friend said he didn't know about any of these illnesses and the person he knew was nothing like the man online.
"He was kind-hearted, very giving, very thoughtful, that's all," the friend said. "Everybody has their own masks, everybody has their facade."
Klimas appeared in Hartford Federal Court on Wednesday and the judge ordered him to be admitted to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Klimas is no longer allowed at UConn for the foreseeable future.
The Secret Service is investigating along with University of Connecticut police and Coventry police.
