Volunteers bag thousands of sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving meals.
DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -
Thanksgiving is one week from today and churches across the Wiregrass are busy trying to make sure everyone has a holiday meal. It's called 'Feeding the Multitudes'.
"We have hunger issues in our own states, own neighborhoods, in our own backyards," said Tonjha Thomas, a volunteer for the event.
Those hunger issues are exactly why local churches are trying to change that, at least for one day, Thanksgiving.
"They don't know if they are going to get this meal and when they do, how thankful is that," stated Thomas.
The feeling hits close to home for Tonjha. Although she is helping with feeding others, she herself has been in the very shoes where she needed the helping hand.
"If it wasn't for someone else helping me, I don't know what me and my family would have done," said Thomas.
Dwight Deal is the Pastor at the Harbor Church, one of the six churches feeding the multitudes. Dwight says, "We actually have people that are helping that don't need bags this year but they did need them last year and so their lives are changing."
Deal and the other organizers hope even more lives will be changed, at least 18 thousand lives. 3600 bags will be given out in Houston, Henry, Dale, Coffee, and Geneva Counties. Each bag will be filled with ham, rice, green beans, and sweet potatoes and will be enough to feed 5 people.
"We also put Bibles in their bags and we do require that they come to a service at one of our churches that day. We want them to be fed spiritually and physically," said Deal. He continued saying, "we are just trying to make sure that no one in these five counties will go hungry. At least that one day out of year, Thanksgiving, they can be thankful that somebody cares about them."
"We are letting them know that they are loved, beyond anything else they are cared about," stated Thomas.
The food will be given away this Saturday. If you are in need or know someone who is, there are still a few hundred slots left, but you must sign up. The limit is one bag for each household. You sign up through the website: www.enough4today.com
Help is still needed for the day of the event. If you would like to volunteer Saturday, call any of the churches listed.
