PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

One of the men accused of stealing an iPad from a deaf man on a MAX train has been arrested.

Police said media coverage of the case led to numerous tips identifying Artease Jacob, 30, as one of the suspects.

Jacob was arrested in Salem on unrelated charges Nov. 20. He will be brought to Multnomah County to face charges related to the iPad theft, according to Portland police.

That case began on Sept. 13. Gary Meierotto was on an eastbound MAX train in southeast Portland when two men began acting aggressively toward him.

Police said when the train came to a stop at the 102nd Avenue Transit Station, one of the suspects grabbed Meierotto's iPad right out of his hands and ran off the train.

Meierotto said he was so nervous that he began crying.

The 62-year-old man is deaf and uses an iPad as his primary means of communication.

When news of the case began to spread, many members of the community contacted Fox 12 offering to help Meierotto. In September, the Portland Nerdfighters and Portland Singing Christmas Tree surprised him with a brand new iPad at the Mac Store in Beaverton.

"This is like a miracle, I'm telling you," Meierotto said at the time. "Like a miracle."

The new iPad was loaded with security features including tracking software and password protection.

A second suspect remains at large in this case. He is described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s, standing 5'10" with a medium build and a Chinese symbol tattooed on his neck. He may be riding a BMX bicycle.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Detective Brent Christensen at 503-823-0842 or email brent.christensen@portlandoregon.gov.
