BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A man is facing arson charges after police said he started a fire in a hotel room and refused to come out.

Beaverton police were called to the Beaverton Budget Inn on Southwest Canyon Road at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday.

A person staying in the motel reported a fire in a neighboring room. That witness said a table inside the room was on fire and smoke was coming out of the room. The witness went into the room and put out the fire.

Police said the man who had been staying in the room, Christoper Coan, 67, was walking through the parking lot with no pants on at the time. He returned to the room as police arrived at the scene.

Coan then refused to leave the room for an hour, before he was finally taken into custody.

He is charged with arson, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and reckless endangering.

The motel was not evacuated and the damage from the fire was contained to the table in the room.

Police said Coan has a history of mental illness and has lived in the Beaverton area for years.
