Portland man dies in Highway 30 crash near Clatskanie

A 39-year-old man from Portland died when his car crashed into a frozen pond off Highway 30 on Friday afternoon.

Oregon State Police said David Glatfelter was trying to pass a semi when he lost control of his pickup, went across the oncoming lane and then crashed into a ditch. His pickup came to rest on its top in a small waterway.

Paramedics and police rushed the scene at milepost 66 - west of Clatskanie - around 12:15 p.m.

Several people also stopped their cars to help after the crash and they pulled the man from his pickup.

After Glatfelter was helped out of his pickup, he collapsed; and bystanders and paramedics tried to revive him. He was eventually pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor at the time of the crash. They also said there was snow and ice on the road at the time of the wreck.

The highway was closed in both directions four miles west of Clatskanie, but one lane reopened around 1:45 p.m.

Weather conditions made driving tricky on many Oregon roads Friday after a snowstorm dumped snow all across Western Oregon.
